Governor Abbott Meets With First Responders, Delivers Update On State Wildfire Response

September 3, 2026 | Mineral Wells, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today surveyed damages from the Ross Fire that impacted Palo Pinto and Jack counties, served meals to first responders, and provided an update on the state’s ongoing wildfire response.

“Residents and first responders have faced the Ross Fire with courage and resilience,” said Governor Abbott. “Thanks to Texans’ extraordinary efforts, there have been no reported deaths or injuries. Once this fire is extinguished, we will remain involved to address the needs of every family in this region and help rebuild our affected communities.”

During his remarks, the Governor highlighted the resources the State of Texas has provided to affected communities as state and local emergency personnel work to contain the fire, which has threatened homes, damaged property, impacted infrastructure, and prompted local evacuations across North Texas.

The Governor was joined by Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd, Senator Phil King, Representative Mike Olcott, Palo Pinto County Judge Shane Long, Jack County Judge Brian Keith Umphress, and other first responders and state officials.

More than 1,300 state responders and over 525 pieces of equipment have been deployed to support local wildfire response operations including the Ross Fire.

Texans impacted by wildfire are urged to report damage when it is safe to do so using TDEM’s Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) by visiting damage.tdem.texas.gov. Reporting damage information through the online survey helps officials connect impacted Texans with resources and services. Texans can locate wildfire resources online through the Texas Disaster Portal at disaster.texas.gov.
