Help Victims of Lawyer Dishonesty– Join the Minnesota Client Security Board!
The Minnesota Supreme Court created the Client Security Board (and its Fund) in 1987 to protect clients when an attorney misuses client money. The board is composed of five lawyers and two non-lawyers, all Minnesotans. The court is currently seeking one attorney (license must be in active status) to fill a vacancy through June 30th, 2029. By serving on the Board, you’ll play a direct role in maintaining public confidence in the legal profession and correcting the wrongs of attorneys who misappropriate client funds.
What the Board Does
- Reviews claims (already investigated by staff) that ask the Fund to reimburse clients who lost money because a lawyer acted dishonestly.
- Makes the final decision about how compensation is paid out.
- Occasionally works on special projects that help improve the board’s work.
What the Role Looks Like
- The time commitment is four board meetings a year, approximately 2 hours each, with some advance preparation like reviewing case materials that are sent to you.
- Meetings are held virtually (with one in-person meeting per year).
- Terms are three years each, and each member can serve a maximum of two terms.
- Compensation is limited to reimbursement for costs.
- Familiarity with the professional responsibility system in Minnesota is a plus, not a must. Training is provided!
