Man Arrested for Stealing Gravestone from Whitehall Cemetery
According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested Bruce W. Gordon Sr., 66, of Jackson, New York, following an investigation into the theft of a gravestone from Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall.
Deputies were called to Greenmount Cemetery at approximately 9:54 a.m. following a report of the larceny of a gravestone valued at more than $1,800. The owners of the gravestone had information suggesting a person known to them may have been responsible. An investigation led to Gordon, who was located in possession of the gravestone and admitted to stealing it from the cemetery. The gravestone was recovered by the Sheriff's Office as part of the investigation.
Gordon was charged with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a class E Felony, and Cemetery Desecration in the First Degree, a class E Felony. He was processed at the Whitehall substation, issued an Appearance Ticket, and released on his own recognizance. Gordon is scheduled to appear in the Town of Whitehall Court at a later date.
