City begins pavement condition assessment on Lawrence streets
Taking care of Lawrence streets begins with knowing exactly how they’re holding up.
The City of Lawrence is partnering with IMS Infrastructure Management Services to conduct pavement condition assessments on streets throughout the community beginning this week. The work is part of the City’s proactive approach to monitoring street conditions and planning maintenance before small pavement problems become bigger, more expensive ones.
IMS will use the IrisPRO Pave system to survey pavement conditions and identify cracks, potholes and other surface issues. The information collected will give City staff a detailed look at the condition of Lawrence streets and help inform future maintenance decisions.
This is one of the ways the City updates and maintains its Pavement Condition Index (PCI), a tool used to measure pavement condition and guide street maintenance planning. By regularly collecting pavement data, the City can track how streets are changing over time, determine which treatments are most appropriate and work to complete maintenance at the right time.
That timing matters, as preventative maintenance can extend the life of a street and delay the need for much more expensive reconstruction. Using pavement condition data helps the City make informed decisions, prioritize available funding and get more value from every dollar invested in Lawrence streets.
Community members may see IMS crews and pavement survey equipment traveling throughout Lawrence during the assessment period. Drivers should use caution around crews and give them room to work safely.
The City appreciates the community’s patience as we take a closer look at Lawrence streets and continue planning for safer, smoother and more reliable infrastructure.
