Consider The "R"s Before Recycling

What is better than Recycling?

Keep the "R"s of Recycling (and waste reduction) in mind to actively prevent waste creation rather than simply managing it after the fact.

1. RE-THINK – buy smart!
Say NO to what you do not need.

  • Do I really need this? Can I borrow it?
  • What is its lifespan? What is the best quality I can afford?
  • Is it recyclable? How will it be disposed of eventually?

2. REDUCE and REFUSE
Consume less and avoid single-use plastics.

  • Look for products that use less packaging – buy soaps, shampoos/conditioners in bar form
  • Buying in bulk reduces packaging, saves money
  • Buy reusable razors and cloth towels vs. paper
  • Just say NO to plastic straws, plastic bags, Styrofoam leftover containers - bring your own sustainable options

3. RE-USE…don’t dump it - donate it!
Extend the lifespan of items by using them multiple times, give them a second life in a new capacity or donate to secondhand alternatives.

  • Charitable organizations are grateful for donations
  • Use online Facebook groups like “Buy Nothing” Hudson  or Stillwater, as well as online marketplaces like Craigslist or networks like Freecycle
  • Put a FREE sign on your items placed at the curb
  • Organize a neighborhood swap-meet
  • When posting your used items on-line, look for others’ discarded treasures
  • Buy re-useable vs disposable items
  • Pack your food in re-usable containers

4. Repair and Maintain
Try to get the maximum life out of what you purchase. With regular maintenance your items won’t be replaced as frequently, saving you money.

  • Tighten screws and touch-up nicks
  • Give furniture a face lift with fresh paint, stain, upholstery or hardware
  • You can find many DIY videos to walk you through a repair – plus, you get a great sense of achievement!

5. Recycle
Process discarded materials so they can be manufactured into new products. This is the final step for items that can no longer be refused, reduced, reused or repaired. Check the County’s recycling website for collection events and disposal options.
