Updated Library Hours
To maintain reliable, high-quality services with available staff, the Manatee County Public Library is adjusting its operating hours starting on Saturday, August 1. The new hours include opening most locations at 10 AM instead of 9 AM, while the Island Library will continue to open at 9 AM but will close at 6 PM three nights a week instead of 8 PM.
We thank the community for their understanding while staff work diligently to make necessary updates.
Central Library, Palmetto Library, Rocky Bluff Library, South Manatee Library
Monday - Thursday: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday - Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Braden River Library and Lakewood Ranch Library
Monday - Thursday: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday - Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday: 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Island Library
Monday - Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday - Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Little Discovery Center
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (by appointment only)
12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (open hours)
Why are these changes needed?
Due to a countywide hiring freeze, the library is operating with nearly 20%
fewer library staff than needed. Adjusting operating hours allows us to
continue providing consistent, high-quality service with the staff
currently available.
Why is there a hiring freeze?
The hiring freeze is part of the County's effort to manage expenditures while evaluating the FY27 budget. Vacant positions are being reviewed to identify potential cost savings while ensuring that critical services continue. Critical services, public safety, and regulatory obligations remain the priority in every review.
When will we see hours return to normal?
Currently, a return to normal operating hours is contingent on the availability of funds and staffing.
What do I do if my pre-existing community room reservation conflicts with the new hours?
All
individuals and groups who have a community room reservation that
conflicts with the new hours will be contacted to discuss their options.
