FAIRFAX – Eastbound and westbound Popes Head Road (Route 654) will be closed at Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) from 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, until 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, for water main work as part of the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be detoured as follows:

• Drivers heading from southbound Fairfax County Parkway to eastbound Popes Head Road: Southbound Fairfax County Parkway and northbound Route 123 (Ox Road) back to Popes Head Road.
• Drivers heading from westbound Popes Head Road to northbound Fairfax County Parkway: Eastbound Popes Head Road, northbound Route 123, and westbound Braddock Road (Route 620) back to northbound Fairfax County Parkway.
• Drivers heading from eastbound Popes Head Road to Route 123: Eastbound Popes Head Road ramp to northbound Fairfax County Parkway, northbound Fairfax County Parkway, and eastbound Braddock Road back to Route 123.

Drivers are asked to follow posted detour signs.

In June, the traffic signal at Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road was removed and the interchange partially opened to traffic.

The Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, scheduled for completion this fall, also includes:

• Building a short segment of the future Shirley Gate Road extension that will provide pedestrian and vehicle access to the future Patriot Park (Fairfax County is designing the rest of the Shirley Gate extension).
• Constructing a shared-use path linking the Fairfax County Parkway Trail to the future Patriot Park.
• Reconstructing the Fairfax County Parkway Trail.
• Installing a sidewalk along the north side of Popes Head Road.
• Extending Ladues End Lane to the new roundabout at Popes Head Road.

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
